JOB FUNCTION / PURPOSE
 
The Sr. Design Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and designs hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment for aerospace landing gear, utility actuator, hydraulic valves, and other fluid controls applications. The Sr. Design Engineer will also be responsiblefor performing tests or supervising the performance of testing on hardware for which he/she is responsible.
 
Reporting Structure and Key Relationships
 
The Sr. Design Engineer primarily interfaces with customers, program managers, other design engineers, stress analysts, performance analysts and reliability analysts. From time to time, this individual will also provide design assistance to other CAP Engineering groups.

  • Customers:    External customers include military and commercial aerospace airframe manufacturers, system and sub-system integrators.
 
 
 
 
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
 
·         Review and validate customer requirements.
 
·         Create design concepts to meet customer requirements
 
·         Perform preliminary stress analyses to size hydro-mechanical/ electro-mechanical devices to meet loading, performance, and life requirements for aircraft landing gears and actuation systems.
 
·         Participate in Concurrent Engineering efforts along with manufacturing, quality and estimating departments.
 
·         Assist Sales and Marketing in responding to customer inquiries.
 
·         Participate company wide Kaizen events as a member of the Engineering team
 
·         Prepare technical documents (technical written response, test procedures and reports, analyses, failure analysis etc…).
 
·         Conduct detail design of hydro-mechanical/electro-mechanical designs (including weight, performance, and tolerance analyses).
 
·         Work with Engineering Stress and Reliability Analysts to ensure analyses are completed accurately and on time.
 
·         Lead Formal Design Reviews for assigned programs.
 
·         Execute development and qualification programs to ensure tests are completed accurately and on time.
 
·         Assist with certification activity involving assigned programs
 
·         Ensure verification of assigned project requirements are completed and meet customer expectations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND COMPETENCIES
 
Education: The Sr. Design Engineer position requires a BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering from a four year accredited institution.
 
Experience: The Sr. Design Engineer must posses 8 years minimum associated experience in design and test of hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, valves, and actuators.
 
Core Competencies:
 
  • Thorough knowledge of aerospace industry accepted design and analysis techniques and methodologies
 
  • Thorough understanding of hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical devices such as actuators, manual, solenoid operated and motorized valves. Landing gears and actuation system experiences are highly desirable
 
  • Must have effective communication, organization, problem solving, interpersonal and team building skills and able to manage multiple projects in a rapidly changing environment
 
  • Must have strong math and statistics and computer skills (MS Office, MS Project, CAD (SolidWorks, CATIA V5 or NX) and MathCad)
 
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5
 
  • Must be able to perform basic mechanical analyses such as stress, heat transfer, and dynamics using conventional hand calculations and FEA software
 
  • Must understand fluid mechanics and be able to perform flow calculations
 
  • Must be proficient in writing technical documents

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
  • Work environment includes front-office and manufacturing. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
